Home Up

We spent two weeks at the end of July at Nelson's Campground in Central CT visiting friends and family, and taking care of some of the necessities of life.  Our grandson Alex turned 5 at the end of July and we helped celebrate his birthday with Stacy and Shelley's Mom, along with Stacy and her birthfamily.  We all met Stacy's halfbrother Bradley who is 6'4" tall!!  We attended Lisa Sach's wedding to Andrew Goodman in Boston.  We've known Lisa for about 15 years and her parents, Carol and Barry are very good friends of ours.

Happy 5th Birthday Alex!

Going to the Goodman wedding in Boston

After the wedding, we drove to a campground close to the Block Island Ferry.  We were finally going to move into our house on Block after renting it for 14 summers!!  We packed up the motorhome, went to the grocery store and then took the ferry across the Block Island Sound!  We spent 10 weeks at our summer place redecorating.  We found several ways to spend our money - painting, window treatments and sanding the floors were just some of the "pots" to put in our money!!  We painted the three bedrooms, three bathrooms and the laundry room.  [Our bedroom, closet and bathroom will need to be repainted because Shelley decided that the color reminded her of Pepto Bismal - and she can't live with that!  Oh well....]  We had tons of company (both friends and family) and had great weather most of the time except, naturally it rained most of the time when Jan and Rob and grandchildren Lilly and Zack were visiting.  We bought two used kayaks for some exercise.  We worked very hard during the time we were there and felt that it was time worth spending.  Of course, we'd been so spoiled as we haven't done that type of work in years....  We met some great people and hope that we'll connect again with them next summer.

We left Block on October 13, spent 2 weeks with visiting our friends while we once again stayed with Wally and Ingrid in West Hartford.  We had a great time and it felt good to be back "in America" after being on an island for 2 1/2 months!  Our first stop south was in Highland Park, NJ to visit with Shelley's sister, Cindy and her family.  We then drove down to the Stull/Fleischacker farm in Cream Ridge, NJ where we spent two nights.  While there, our front leveling jack got stuck half in and half out of the gravel driveway.  We got an RV technician to come out but he couldn't rectify the problem, so he took the jack off, allowing us to proceed.  We left on Monday morning, October 30 and drove to Leesburg VA to visit Jan, Rob and Lilly and Zack.  We stayed at the parking lot for the pool of the Homeowner's Association because the street in front of their house is too hilly without the front jack.  We took the kids trick or treating on Halloween and just hung out for a few days. It was fun watching Lilly and Zack show off their academic skills in reading and math.  We left them on Friday and backtracked somewhat, traveling east to Middletown, DE to visit our friends Laura and Shelly Singer.  Laura is recuperating from a bad case of shingles and it was great to see she was feeling better.  We had a great time visiting and got to see Shelley's nephew Robert in Wilmington, where he is in law school.  Finally, on Monday morning, we took off headed south.  We drove across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge near Annapolis and picked up I-95.  The first day we got as far as Dunn, NC and spent the night in a WalMart parking lot.  While there, we replenished the pantry and Shelley got a haircut!  The next day we drove through the rain and made it to Florida.  We spent the night at a Elks Lodge parking lot (with water and electric) in Orange City, in suburban Jacksonville.  It was a kick going for a walk after dinner without a coat or sweatshirt.  On Wednesday we left Jacksonville and headed down I-95 through the northern part of Florida.  We got off I-95 and headed west on I-4.  By 1 PM we pulled into Deer Creek and found our campsite in the Regal Pointe area.  Before we even pulled got onto our site, friends whom we had met last year gathered round to greet us.  It was really a great feeling.  We spent the next few days renewing acquaintances.  We went to a flea market and bought some plants to plant around our site and Kenny and Anne Ring gave us part of a banana tree to plant.  Of course we needed fertilizer for plants and grass and also weed killer as well as tools to apply them with. We bought some stuff and borrowed others.  On Sunday we packed up the coach and drove to nearby Wildwood where the manufacturer of our motorhome maintains a repair facility.  Most of the issues we had were minor, but we had a few important things that needed tending to.  Just about everyone at the repair facility would rather be somewhere else, so tempers are short and the level of frustration is high. We met up with Jeanette and Alan White from Alaska who were managing to maintain a reasonable level of emotion.  They were really nice folks, and hopefully we'll meet up with them somewhere along the way.  We finally left on Friday, November 17 and headed back to Deer Creek, where we continued working on improving our site.  We bought some more plants and planted them and helped out some of our friends who were having houses built.  Then, on the following Thursday, Thanksgiving, our daughter Stacy and grandson Alex flew down from Connecticut to visit for a few days.  We had been looking  forward to their visit for days, and woke up on Thursday full of anticipation.  On Thanksgiving afternoon the four of us, as well as friends Anne and Kenny Ring and Cathy and Tom Bataglia went out to Golden Corral (a local buffet place) for Thanksgiving dinner.  The food was surprisingly good and we had a wonderful time.  Afterwards, we walked around Downtown Disney and Alex really enjoyed playing with Legos and on the playground there.  But all of a sudden, Alex hit a brick wall.  He and Stacy had gotten up about 3 AM, and he just about collapsed.  We returned to the campground and everyone fell asleep pretty rapidly.  The next three days were filled with Disney experiences.  We went to the Magic Kingdom on Friday and Sunday and to Animal Kingdom on Saturday.  Alex had a blast.  He was overwhelmed and pretty tentative with most things, but when he found something that he was comfortable with, he loved it.  He went on a wild water rapids ride with Shelley and Norm, and couldn't wait to go again, so Norm braved the rapids for the 2nd time and got absolutely soaked.  Alex wanted to go again. He couldn't wait to get the autographs of some of the Disney characters in his autograph book.  We have had adult guests in our motorhome for 3 or 4 days, and while it is somewhat crowded, things have worked out just fine.  But we discovered that having a young child on board is very confining.  Stacy and Alex stayed at a nearby motel for the last 2 nights, and that worked out fine.  Our friend Cathy let Alex steer her golf cart, and Alex just loved it.  It was very sad on 11/27 as we drove Stacy and Alex to the airport for their return trip to Connecticut
